You should go to either a toy store or a store that sells greeting cards (A large store that has both, such as Wal-Mart would also work fine). If you choose to analyze greeting cards, look at cards for new parents, and see what differences there are between the cards for male babies and female babies. If you choose to analyze toys, look at the differences between the toys in the boys and girls sections of the store. Take notes as you analyze the toys/cards. What are the messages are given to boys and girls about how they should act, or the activities they should participate in? After you have analyzed the objects write a paper describing the messages you see. Pay special attention to how the objects describe and depict boys and girls, and be sure to answer the following questions. What patterns do you notice? Are there many differences? By drawing on the article by West and Zimmerman, explain how these objects help explain how we “do gender.” What messages do these objects give us about the position or role of men in women in society? You should look at a minimum of ten toys/cards (five for boys and five for girls).
