A Précis is a valuable tool in public administration. It is a brief summary of the essential elements of a book, or text. The basic characteristics of an effective précis are concision, clarity, completeness, unity, and coherence. "A Précis is not a summary. A summary is simply a brief moulding of a passage, caring little for order and style, whereas a précis is a lucid and systematic development of the central idea of a given passage” (Shukla, S, 2010, p88).
In this assessment you are asked to construct a collection of five Précis that represent the breadth of contemporary thought on one of the following themes:
the sources of organisational politics
the consequences of organisational politics.
Each précis represents one contemporary text that explores your chosen theme.
To be successful in this assessment item you need to:
Identify a spectrum of contemporary thought on your chosen theme
Identify key authors who write on these themes
Identify the key works of those authors
Write an individual Précis on each of your five key texts.
Each of your précis should exemplify a dominant aspect of a point on the spectrum of contemporary authors within your chosen theme.
