Discuss 3-5 of the poems from “When my Brother was an Aztec,” while paying attention to class terms like diction (word choice), point of view, syntax, form (line breaks, structure, stanzas), imagery, anything we’ve discussed in class (narrative, lyric, dramatic, metaphor, tone, place, character development), or any pattern(s) you see within the poet’s work. Be sure to introduce the book title using italics and the poet’s name within the opening paragraph. Be sure to introduce the “title of each poem” selected using quotes. When you quote lines from the poems to back up your points (and you will need to do this often), you must remember to include the line break in the quote as a back slash like this: “I want a red dress. / I want it flimsy and cheap.” Direct quotes must be in quotes. No italics. No block quotes. Simply quotes around direct language from the book. Stay away from in text citation. You will be graded on MLA format: Times New Roman in 12 point size, 1″ margins on all sides, page #s, a centered title . Minimum length 3 pages. Any less and I will cut 33% of your grade. Tip: Avoid summarizing what happens horizontally in the poem. I want to see you analyzing how Diaz uses key terms within her poetry.
